Finned Wall

The Brief

Advanced Design Innovations has been awarded the contract to design and construct a series of fin-type mullions for the external wall of a home in inner Melbourne.

The project's complexity derives from the curved face of the wall, which follows a number of different radii as it blends from concave to convex curvatures.

The Challenge

The fin mullions must perform two functions:

facilitating a removable glazing channel for trapezoidal shaped glass, and generating a curved, organic shaped wall.

During the detailed design process, we found that the complex interaction between the curved wall and the raked roof would make it virtually impossible to assemble the wall on site while maintaining the tight tolerances required to fit the trapezoidal shaped glass into position

The Result

Sections of the wall were pre-assembled using a “jigsaw” approach.

This approach deskilled the operation and made a difficult job far more straightforward and cost-effective.
