Telescopic windows
The Brief
Advanced Design Innovations has been engaged to design and cost a telescopic window wall and overhead glass awning for the outdoor balcony area of a Melbourne restaurant.
The brief was to produce telescopic windows that were 2600mm high, cantilevered off the balcony, with glass panels that could be lowered to provide a sense of openness or raised to provide protection from inclement weather.
The Challenge
Due to the size of the glass panels (1800mm wide x 1350mm high), a new type of guide track had to be designed to retain them.
Off-the-shelf guide tracks were inadequate because they would not adequately retain the guide wheels in both the X and Y planes. This would cause vibration and rattling in windy conditions.
The Result
We have designed an ingenious wall consisting of glass panels that slide up and down a track.
This custom-designed track retains the panels in both X & Y planes and eliminates vibration in windy conditions.
Movement is manually operated with the assistance of a counterbalance inside the mullion, which also incorporates the guide track system.
