Storage Tanks
The Brief
Advanced Design Innovations has been awarded the contract to design and fabricate a sculptural rainwater tank for a landmark high-rise commercial development in Melbourne’s CBD precinct.
Rainwater from surrounding buildings will be stored in the tank (to be located just outside the building entrance) and then used for irrigating landscaped areas, allowing the development to achieve more sustainable water consumption.
The Challenge
The client required a tank design that was fully functional internally, but appeared as a piece of sculpture from the outside,
With an organic shape covered in a brushed stainless steel cladding. Water collected in the tank had to be kept clean so that when used for irrigating garden beds, it wouldn’t cause discolouration on surrounding walls.
The Result
Since constructing the entire tank from stainless steel was unfeasible, another solution had to be found.
In our successful design, the tank shell will be made from mild steel covered with brushed stainless steel cladding.
To prevent rust, the mild steel will be coated internally with a premium paint finish (among other rust-prevention measures).
This creative engineering solution will enable the finished project to meet both the functional and aesthetic criteria of the brief.
