Skene Place
Fitzroy North - Melbourne
The Brief
Skene Place is a warehouse conversion in Melbourne’s inner north.
As part of the project, Advanced Design Innovations was engaged to design a privacy screen, laser cut with an intricate floral design, for an upper balcony.
The Challenge
The screen, made of slender sheet metal, was to span over four metres.
The architects requested no backing supports at the rear of the screen, making the provision of adequate support a considerable engineering challenge.
The unusual length of the screen also eliminated the use of standard laser cutting machines.
The Result
In order to make the screen structurally strong enough to resist deflection over the large span, mild steel was selected instead of
Aluminium as the screen material. This choice in turn made coating the screen difficult. We resolved this difficulty applying a unique surface coating under the painted finish to ensure 100% coverage.
The screen was made from two pieces and then carefully welded together. The join is almost invisible despite the high gloss paint finish.
The screen is fastened it to the wall using chemical anchors and stainless steel dome nuts.
The result is a screen that meets all the design requirements, and is a key functional and decorative element of the project...
