Folded Stairs
The Brief
Advanced Design Innovations were contracted to design the stairs for this striking extension to an existing family home in inner Melbourne.
The architect’s strong, box-like design required “folded” stairs to achieve a transparent profile.
The Challenge
The requirement to design the stairs as one length of plate, without stringers on the sides for support,
Presented significant engineering challenges. The stairs could not be fully tested until after manufacture, meaning we were staking our reputation on a successful outcome.
The Result
We met the technical challenges and successfully designed and fabricated an elegant staircase that fits perfectly with the project’s aesthetic vision.
As the architect envisaged, a person walking up the stairs appears from the side to be rising directly from the kitchen bench.
