Aurora Place, Sydney
The Brief
Designed by Renzo Piano, Aurora Place is an award-winning, landmark mixed use development in the heart of Sydney’s CBD.
Advanced Design Innovations’ senior partner Michael Whytlaw was engaged by Arup Façade Engineering as an employee to design the mechanical elements of the residential building’s louvre façade.
The Challenge
The building’s glass louvre panels were supported by glass mullions.
This presented a unique design constraint, as the driving mechanism that operated the louvres had to be incorporated into these glass mullions.
The design process required rethinking the way standard louvres operate, and developing a new and innovative mechanism.
The Result
After a rigorous design review with Renzo, the final design became reality.
Instead of attempting to hide the mechanical elements, the final design makes an elegant feature of those elements, bringing them into full public view. The louvre facade was manufactured and installed by a local Australian contractor.
